Bespoke Pattern Block Making

This short course is run by the Newham College School of Fashion & Tailoring and takes place in person at the Fashion and Textile Museum. This course is suitable for students aged 18+ and runs for five days over five weeks.

What will you learn?

Pattern blocks are the starting point of any pattern drafting. During this short course aimed at beginners, you will learn how to draft your own blocks using personal or standard measurements, alongside terminology and pattern block presentation. At each session, you will be introduced to pattern block-making techniques to produce a skirt, close-fitted bodice, and dress blocks. Dependant on time, advanced learners may also produce a trouser block.

On completion, you will receive a certificate of attendance.

Entry requirements

This course is ideal for beginners. An ability to sew is desirable.

Materials and equipment

You will need to bring hard pencils, sharpener, eraser, pins, stationary file with sleeves, paper scissors, fabric scissors, notebook and pen. Calico will be available to purchase at £1.50 per metre.

You will be provided with metre rules, pattern masters, weights, pattern paper, and card.

What can you do next?

Our short course in Pattern Cutting is the perfect accompaniment to bespoke block making. You will be able to use your personal blocks or the standard blocks.
